In 2002, Gyles Webb of Thelema purchased an idyllic 100 ha apple farm in Elgin, a cool-climate coastal region which is quickly gaining a reputation for intense, aromatic white wines. Webb named the property Sutherland and began converting approximately 25 ha to vineyards, starting with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The wines are vinified and bottled at Thelema's Stellenbosch estate. Sutherland is located along the Green Mountain Eco Route, the world's first biodiversity wine route. Many rare and endangered species of protea can be found in the area.
Good wine is a necessity of life.
